Social Media Insight from Bit.ly, including The Best TIme to Share on Pinterest

Get ready to start pinning! According to a study by Bit.ly, as released by Mashable, the best time to pin on Pinterest is Saturday mornings. So for those businesses who are pinning during the workday, you aren’t getting the best possible engagement on your pins. Instead, it appears you will start having to wake up early on Saturday mornings and start your pinnings.

The same study by Bit.ly finds some other interesting information for social media users. The half life of posts (the time it reaches a post to reach half of the engagement it will likely receive during its lifetime) lasts only a few hours on Twitter and Facebook, 2.8 and 3.1 respectively. The half-life is longer on sites such as YouTube, StumbleUpon, and Tumblr. I’m assuming this is because of the higher frequency of posts on Twitter and Facebook. To be honest, I’m not surprised the half life on Twitter isn’t shorter, considering that if you follow hundreds of people as I do, I get about 50 new posts in my newsfeed every few minutes.

Finally, based on the amount of engagement each social networks received, Bit.ly ranked the social networks as follows in terms of the highest-attention getting social media sites:

  1. Facebook
  2. YouTube
  3. Soundcloud
  4. LinkedIn
  5. Twitter
  6. Blogspot
  7. Tumblr
  8. Vimeo
  9. Reddit

If you’re like me, you likely had to google “Soundcloud” to find out that it is a social media site devoted to sharing sounds.

In conjunction with the results from this study, it’s also important to remember your audience and think about how they might be using different social networking sites differently.
