SEO and Google: Website Update

Google updates their search algorithm all of the time, but their recent update to it has greatly changed the way SEO and traffic referral work together. Over the past few weeks, there has been a very significant change in traffic referred to my site from Google. The change has not only been an overall less amount of traffic, but also odd, daily changes in it that I had not seen previously.

An example of the traffic is shown below. As you can see, there are relatively large changes in daily visitors, something that was relatively consistent with the exception being times I was heavily promoting posts.

If there is one thing I have noticed, it’s the impact paid media and its recency that has an impact in Google delivery. I use several paid media sources to help drive traffic. Typically it is used to push several different articles. Recently, after a few days have passed since writing the article and promoting it, traffic from Google to that page drops despite the paid media behind it being consistent. The result has been an ever changing paid media strategy and an attempt to update old posts- with not so much success.

It just goes to show that SEO isn’t as simple as it used to be. It is a difficult, ever-changing aspect web owners must always stay in tune to, or suffer the consequences of lower site traffic.

If anyone has any good articles on the latest in SEO, or new means of driving traffic, let me know as I am extremely interested.
